CVS Selling Over the Counter Paternity Tests in Texas

June 13th, 2008 · No Comments

CVS drug stores and pharmacies are now selling over the counter paternity tests in Texas.

The tests are $29.99 and do not include the $119 lab and processing fee. This is the first time a paternity test has been sold over the counter in a Texas drug store. Apparently, Walgreen’s sells a different DNA paternity test via the internet.

The test is administered by swabbing the insides of the cheeks of the mother, child, and alleged father (s).

Few Staten Island Men Receive Alimony

June 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

Regardless of the national trend that has more men receiving spousal support, the trend does not extend to Staten Island men. Divorce lawyers there see very little evidence that men are receiving spousal support.

Nationally, the percentage of men receiving alimony payments rose to 3.6% for the 5-year period ending in 2006. That was an increase from 2.4% for the previous 5-year period.

There is another trend that  has the lower-earning party opting out of alimony and instead requesting a larger portion of the assets of the marriage. This, in many cases, is because alimony payments are considered taxable income whereas assets might be exempt.

Alberta, Canada Targeting Child Support Dodgers

May 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Those parents in Alberta, Canada who have been dodging their child support payments will soon face much more strict penalties.

The pentalties include a new, special interest rate on owed child support and a new special investigation team. The team will be responsible for tracking down parents that  hide their income or work under the table in an effort to avoid paying child support.

The investigative unit will have 6 officers and 6 detectives in place by this summer. They will not, however, be the first special unit. There are currently several other groups designed to target parents not paying their child support.

Woman Sentenced on Charge of Felony Non-Support

May 16th, 2008 · No Comments

A New Hampshire woman was sentenced this week on a charge of felony non-support, after admitting in court that she owed nearly $18,500 in unpaid child-support. Samantha Bilodeau, of Manchester, was sentenced to two to four years in prison, but suspended the sentence for five years, excluding just over 200 days of time served. Bilodeau will serve five years of probation under the supervision of child support services.

Bilodeau’s arrest is just another sign of a rising trend in which wives pay child support to their former husbands.

Canadian Study Reveals Men Hit Harder By Divorce

May 5th, 2008 · No Comments

According to a recent study by Statistics Canada, men suffer more emotional effects from divorce than do women. The study reported that newly divorced men were 6 times more likely to suffer from depression than their married counterparts, while women were just over 3 times as likely to suffer the same symptoms.

Though the 10 year long study was not designed to identify the cause of this gender discrepancy, it did mention that divorce tends to cause major life changes, such as loss of child custody, crumbling of social networks, and financial troubles.

Going through divorce is tough for almost everyone. Let an experienced San Diego divorce lawyer guide you through this difficult process. Call Fischer & Van Thiel today at 760-722-7646.
