Covenant Marriage Program Idealistically Dangerous

September 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Some states are trying to introduce new measures to fight against divorce rates.  Particularly in Oklahoma, ‘covenant marriages’ are being pushed as a preferable option.  These types of marriages come with pre-marriage counseling and marriage classes.  Once couple have gone through the counseling and still decide to get married, the state will not allow them to get a divorce based on incompatibility.

This is dangerous because the state assumes that simply getting counseling before getting married will solve all marriage problems.  This idealistic approach to mitigating the marriage process assumes that divorce is a result of not having worked out potential pitfalls.  Times change and circumstances change as well.  And no one can predict how things will end up.

The best thing to do in the case that you are in a failing marriage is to seek the aide of an experienced divorce law attorney.  The attorney will know the best course of action to take in times like these.
