The Supreme Court of Georgia ruled recently that a Florida lawyer could not be held in contempt of court for failing to pay over $450,000 in child support. Willie Gary, a wealthy, married attorney, had a relationship with Diana Gowins in 2000 and fathered two children. The couple agreed to an out-of-court settlement, which Gary contends amounted to $14,000 a month in child support for both children, while Gowins claims $14,000 per child.
A court of appeals ruled in 2005 that Gary could be held in contempt for failure to pay child support, but that decision was reversed by the recent Supreme Court judgment.
Gowins’ attorney said that they would continue to pursue the money they are owed.
