According to a recent study by Statistics Canada, men suffer more emotional effects from divorce than do women. The study reported that newly divorced men were 6 times more likely to suffer from depression than their married counterparts, while women were just over 3 times as likely to suffer the same symptoms.
Though the 10 year long study was not designed to identify the cause of this gender discrepancy, it did mention that divorce tends to cause major life changes, such as loss of child custody, crumbling of social networks, and financial troubles.

Christopher Mason of California was recently indicted by a grand jury in Wichita for four counts of failing to pay child support over a 10 year period. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that Mason had children living in Sedgwick, Shawnee, Reno and Sumner counties in Kansas.
The Child Support Recovery Act makes it a federal crime under certain circumstances not to pay support for a child living in another state. The past-due child support obligation must be either greater than $5,000 or must have remained unpaid for more than one year. The United States Attorney’s Office must prove that the noncustodial parent knew about the obligation, was financially able to meet it at the time it was due, and intentionally did not pay it.
If convicted, Mason faces a maximum penalty of two years in federal prison on each count and a fine up to $250,000, as well as the unpaid child support.

The Supreme Court of Georgia ruled recently that a Florida lawyer could not be held in contempt of court for failing to pay over $450,000 in child support. Willie Gary, a wealthy, married attorney, had a relationship with Diana Gowins in 2000 and fathered two children. The couple agreed to an out-of-court settlement, which Gary contends amounted to $14,000 a month in child support for both children, while Gowins claims $14,000 per child.
A court of appeals ruled in 2005 that Gary could be held in contempt for failure to pay child support, but that decision was reversed by the recent Supreme Court judgment.
Gowins’ attorney said that they would continue to pursue the money they are owed.
